The outspoken professional basketball player, who was also a wrestler and activist, made his feelings about transgender athletes in women’s sports clear by posting a lengthy statement on X.
Kanter on trans athletes
On X, the basketball star joined Martina Navratilova, Inga Thompson, Riley Gaines, Paula Scanlan, and even O.J. Simpson in a fight to keep transgender athletes from women’s sports. Kanter started with, “Men don’t belong in women’s spaces. Restrooms – Locker Rooms or Sports.” Then he gave an example.
The basketball player had some questions
The player continued, “Since I’m blackballed from the @NBA, should I put on a wig, identify as a woman and start dominating the @WNBA? He wondered, “Is that when the outrage will begin?
Not holding back
The star, who openly spoke against some of the world leaders, further asked, “Is that fair to all the women who spent their whole life chasing their goals? Where are all the Women Rights Activists and Feminists?!”
Kanter against China
The player slammed Xi Jinping, the Chinese paramount leader, as a “brutal dictator” and expressed his support for the Free Tibet movement. This led to the Chinese government stopping streaming all Boston Celtics games. Kanter further advocated for the boycott of the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in China.
Kanter’s activism in Turkey
Kanter also stated if he were to go to Turkey to play, he would end up in jail, killed by the government, or a fake poisoning incident would be made up. He criticized the president, Erdoğan, after the failed 2016 coup d’état attempt. Kanter called him the “Hitler of our century.” Due to the backlash, he risked becoming a man with no country but gained a US passport in 2021.
Most Americans oppose including trans athletes in sports
Americans against trans athletes in women’s sports are in the majority, a poll concluded. 69% of people say transgender athletes should only be allowed to compete on sports teams that correspond with the sex they were assigned at birth, NBC reported in May. The outlet pointed out that this was an increase of 7% compared to 2021.
World Athletics banned transgender women from competing
World Athletics (WA), the governing body for track and field and other running competitions, announced in March that transgender women who went through male puberty can no longer compete in women’s events at international competitions.
Union Cycliste Internationale also issued a ban
The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) announced in July a revised transgender policy that effectively ends competition at the highest level for transgender athletes who have gone through puberty.
British Rowling also changed the rules
British Rowing said only athletes who are “assigned female at birth” will be able to compete in the women’s competitions and represent England or Britain in international competitions, including the Olympics and the Paralympics.
British Rowing is stricter than World Rowing
World Rowing guidance says that a transgender competition can compete if their testosterone “concentration has been less than 2.5 nmol/L continuously for a period of at least the previous 24 months.” The British Rowing made clearer and stricter rules, though all athletes can compete in an “open” category. Organizers can offer a “mixed” category if 50% of the crew is eligible from the women’s category.
